Enjoy the melodies of Broadway -- some well-known and some hidden gems -- when "Showtune" debuts Sept. 5 at the new Broad River Arts Center in St. Andrews.
The musical revue commemorates the work of celebrated composer the late Jerry Herman.
It's the initial show at Columbia's newest arts hub, located in the activities center of Virginia Wingard Memorial United Methodist Church, 1500 Broad River Road.
Herman is known for what he called "simple, hummable" lyrics featured in shows such as "Hello Dolly," "Mame," "La Cage Aux Folles" and more.
The three dozen tunes range from romantic to optimistic to poignant blended with sophisticated wit. The cast includes University of South Carolina music students Sarah Alexander, Curran Bramhall, Jonah Isaac-Brooks and Taylor McCullough along with well-known Midlands performer Kerri Roberts.
Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 5, 6, 7 & 14 and 3 p.m. Sept. 8 & 15. Admission is $20.
Call (803) 922-5810 for reservations between 12:30-4 :30 pm Monday-Friday. Tickets also will be available at the box office an hour before show time. Neither online purchase nor credit card payment is available. All seating is general admission on a first-come, first-served basis..
